Laos and the United States launched a soybean war against my country, and the four major grain merchants besieged our country. How can we turn losses into profits?
We have all eaten soybeans, but can you imagine that this small plant can trigger a grain dispute between China and the United States? In 2004, there was a food dispute between my country and the United States known as the "Soybean War". The ending ended in a fiasco for our country, and countless domestic agricultural products enterprises went bankrupt as a result, which sounded the alarm for our country's food security. So, how can seemingly ordinary soybeans have such a big impact. What can we learn about food security from the soybean war? In this issue, the Ziya Children's Interest Knowledge Bureau will take you to understand the soybean war and why it started. Soybean Wars
Soybeans originate in my country and are an economic crop that we have grown for more than 5,000 years. Before the 1940s, China's soybean production had always been the world's largest, but at this point in time, the United States also began to promote soybeans nationwide. With a high degree of industrialization and the unique environment of the Great Plains, the United States surpassed China in soybean production in 1942, paving the way for the soybean war 60 years later. Americans plant so many soybeans for oil extraction. The old American made scientific improvements to soybean varieties, so that the oil yield of soybeans reached more than 20% in 1965. At the same time, in my country, which is still in the development stage, the soybean oil yield is only about 15% of the traditional one. However, at that time, my country's soybeans were still self-sufficient, and there were even surpluses that could be exported. At this time, the soybean issue between China and the United States has not yet emerged. Although the output and quality are not as good as yours, we can use it ourselves. Until the reform and opening up, my country's soybean consumption began to skyrocket, and soybeans began to rely on imports. U.S. grain merchants have their eyes on China, and the soybean war has begun. So how did the soybean war work? Why did our country fail miserably at that time? Monopoly crisis
After the reform and opening up, my country's economic development is booming, and people's living consumption is also rising along with it. In the past period of scarcity of materials, the people of our country lived their lives carefully, and soybeans were not just needed products. But in the 1990s, people's demand for living standards led to a surge in soybean oil consumption. And many industrial development is also inseparable from soybeans, so in 1995, my country's soybean imports exceeded local production for the first time, reaching more than 26 million tons. Even China, a big soybean country, has to import tens of millions of tons of soybeans, so the source of these soybeans can only be the United States, which is the largest producer of soybeans. Relying on highly developed mechanized agriculture and excellent varieties of soybeans, Americans have obtained huge benefits in the process of exporting soybeans to my country. Although we don't want the Americans to be slaughtered, but due to development needs, we can only tolerate it temporarily. As a result, the old beauty actually went ahead and tried to dominate the entire Chinese soybean market. In 2004, American grain companies adm, Bunge, and Cargill planned to short Chinese soybeans. They also joined the French grain company Louis Dreyfus and formed the four major grain merchants to besiege the Chinese grain market, and the soybean war officially kicked off. Lao Mei's approach is straightforward, but it also leaves us helpless. In March 2004, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the United States had suffered a natural disaster, and soybean production would be severely reduced, and then used the strength of the four major grain merchants to raise the price of soybeans to a high price of 4,400 yuan per ton. You must know that many companies in my country needed to import soybeans from the United States. As soon as the news came out, soybeans were immediately looted. Under the atmosphere of panic and the push of international speculators, the price of soybeans in my country once reached 6,000 yuan per ton. But just a month later, the U.S. Department of Agriculture suddenly increased soybean production, and the previously described natural disaster disappeared out of thin air. International speculators have also received the news long ago, and frantically sold soybeans in advance. The price of soybeans fell to 2,200 yuan per ton overnight, causing huge losses to countless companies in my country. American capital also took advantage of it at this time and acquired many bankrupt soybean oil companies in my country. Almost achieved the ambition to control my country's soybean oil market. It was not until the end of China Grain Reserves that the US capital was driven away, so that my country's soybean security would not be lost to the enemy. Where is it going?
Although China Grain has driven away the US capital that wants to take advantage of the situation, my country's soybean demand still exists, for which my country has to make a large Money to appease businesses and buy soybeans. Although the United States failed to achieve its ambition to control the Chinese soybean market, it also made a lot of money. In this soybean war, we can say that the loss is ugly, and it also sounded the alarm for my country's food security. Our country has learned from the pain and summed up its experience. Even for economic development, the bottom line of food security cannot be left behind. So after 2004, my country introduced a series of policies to benefit farmers. Scientific research departments have also continued to improve soybeans, so that my country's soybean quality has gradually caught up with the international advanced level. Despite this, the wounds left by the soybean war have not healed. By 2021, 85% of my country's soybeans need to be imported. The haze of the United States' monopoly on my country's soybeans has not dissipated. To this end, my country has also launched a series of policies, such as piloting mechanized soybean production areas in Heilongjiang and promoting small agricultural machinery in the south. Scientific research departments are also actively developing high-yield and disease-resistant high-quality soybeans. The output of soybeans in my country has now grown significantly. Today, in addition to soybeans, crops such as corn and rapeseed, my country also needs a large amount of imports for a long time. Kissinger once said that whoever controls the food controls all mankind. For the sake of national security, in recent years, my country has been constantly emphasizing the importance of food security. The tragedy of the soybean war must never be repeated in our country.
